Schools out for the summer!

I can’t seem to get that Alice Cooper song out of my head right now! My daughter’s school managed to drag out this last week because the kids really had no reason to be there. Clean up, parties, pinics etc. Actually it was all fun, but yay, we’re free for the next 3 months!

Several people have suggested that I teach some children’s ceramics classes. So, guess what? I’m going to experiment with my daughter and her friends. They’re going into 3rd grade, so I think now would be the perfect age to get their hands muddy!

Children are also so creative. They’re not bothered by what something SHOULD look like or what color something SHOULD be.

This bowl just came out of the kiln about a week and a half ago. It measures 8″ in diameter and 5″ high.

Miniatures!

Today, I thought I would share some mini-pots that I threw on the wheel. The vase is about 1 1/4″ tall and 1″ wide. The plate and bowl are each about 1 1/4″ wide.

I originally made these for my daughter’s doll house that my Mom had given her for Christmas. We’re still working on decorating the house, big task. It is a 3 story colonial style house that we built from a kit.

To be honest, I think that I am having more fun with the doll house than my daughter is!!! I am letting her make all the design decisions…she has chosen some very mod wall paper, bright colors and retro design. She wants the exterior to be red and blue. Why not?

Back to the pots, it’s hard enough throwing regular pots on the wheel, let alone the minis. I use a technique called “throwing off the hump” to make these. Essentially, a large piece of clay is centered on the wheel and I throw many pieces off of the same piece of clay.

What do you think?

For the next 2 weeks, I will not be adding any new work to my Etsy shop because I’ll be in PA helping my mom move. I am a little sad to take an Etsy break, because as we all know it’s about marketing and maintaining a presence. I have had 8 sales so far (1 was a PIF) in May and that makes me think that I could actually build a successful little business. I am also having a lot of fun and am no longer listing on the other “E***” site!

I do, however, have new ceramic work to show and tell. I’ve uploaded my new photos to Flickr so I can blog from my mom’s computer!

This is a vase that I originally made for an art show whose theme was, you guessed it, wisteria! I didn’t get it finished in time, but I’m still pretty happy with the way it turned out.

The process to create this would be another good slide show. Maybe a future demo. Working with clay is all about the process!
