This is an early work of mine from college. Each square is approximately 12 inches square by 2 inches deep. It is primarily a handbuilt piece with the aid of a slab roller. I used chestnut brown clay, mitred the edges and corners, joined them together to form the boxy shape, carved out the central squares and added organic sculptural elements to the centers. After the pieces were bisque fired, the organic shapes were glazed an eggshell color and I added raw copper carbonate to the central squares. These were high fired in a gas kiln. After I removed them from the kiln, I added copper wire accents.
I love the square shape and continue to be enthralled by the possibilites of using it in art making. For some reason, when I returned to Colorado 2 years ago, I really concentrated on perfecting my throwing of functional ceramic objects.
I realized today, that I want to get back to hand building and clay sculpture. That isn’t to say that I will not throw again, because I love throwing pots on the wheel. It’s very meditative.
