Three Cups of Tea

Three Cups of Tea

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson

I’m very jealous – Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea visited my daughter’s school today.  Parents received a special email saying – “Don’t bother showing up, this is for students only.”  Arghhhh.  This is definitely one school assembly I would have loved attending.  Oh well…I did have the pleasure of helping my daughter craft questions for the author because her class was going to get a special audience with him.  I’m not sure she chose any of my questions or not which were all about the schools that his work has funded – hers were more along the lines of, “What does yak milk taste like?”

Greg Mortenson sounds like an inspiring person who turned a negative into an opportunity.  His mission: to “promote peace one school at a time.”  Even my shopping loving 11 year old daughter is moved and that says a lot – she has started reading Three Cups of Tea and has announced that she’s saving all her Pennies for Peace.  Who can argue with that?

No clay this week, maybe next.  We have done a decent job of clearing the garagio of all but my studio stuff which is still in boxes – but that’s a start.  A start that is sadly taking a back seat to being a mom, writing papers, reading (not for pleasure) and a sundry of other school activities.

Have a great week,

Cynthia

  • Any time folks are thinking of others in addition to themselves, that’s a good thing. Congratulations to your daughter and to Greg for doing so. I am hoping in some small way, I can do something for the many I will surely see along the way in my travels coming up soon.

  • Well he’s doing a good job of reaching the kids anyway…maybe the school should have an assembly for the parents!!
excellent job on the clean out, it all takes so much time eh? all the best on your paper work…

  • Last year some local potters sponsored a benefit silent auction forthe Central Asia Institute, the organization Greg founded to “promote and support community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.” They asked local potters to donate 3 cups which they they auctioned off in groups of 3 both on-line and at a live event. The on-line auction had a “buy now” donation associated with it so many of the donations never even made it to the live event! I was thrilled when my 3 cups received a donation of $30 more than the “buy now” amount of $70. The website they set up for the event is still active if you wanted to take a look at what was done -

    • Terry – this is so cool! I just spent a good amount of time on the website looking at everything your group did – very inspiring to say the least….

I’m tempted to suggest a similar fund raiser to the Colorado Potters Guild, though it might take some convincing.

      • Thanks, Cynthia. The organizers put a lot of effort into it – I can put you in touch with them if your group does do something like this and wants more info on what they did to make it so successful. Miss you on EMT but know you are busy with moving and school.

    • Oh yeah – running is what keeps me sane Andrea and is a much healthier stress reliever than my cadre of comfort food! (though, I do admit to indulging once in awhile) I have a feeling that the house isn’t going to start looking more comfy until Winter Break.

    • Surprisingly, Mary, now that I’m busier – I’m finding spare time here and there and am interested in getting back into clay again. Weird how that happens.
