Art of the day on EBSQ!

Hello everyone! I’m playing catch up on emails, blogs, etc. after a weekend of over-indulgence, celebration and Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that today, one of my mini-fabric quilted ACEOs was selected as the “Art of the Day” on EBSQ. The theme this week is Stars!

Meanwhile, back on the farm, the temps have been in the 40’s the past few days and lots of snow melt is wreaking havoc on our humble abode. We found water in our basement family room and are spending the morning, ripping up the carpet, wet-vacuuming the basement and trying to dry it out as best we can before the next storm hits on Thursday. This one is not expected to be as big…only 6″ or so.

My in-laws are on a plane on their way back to Texas as I write, where it is hopefully warmer and drier. I hope to get some work done in my studio this week as things settle back to more of a routine.

Snow Update

I know I was going to take a little blog break over the holidays, but I thought I should share some snow photos from the “Blizzard of ‘06″. It was kind of nice being housebound for a couple of days. Today we managed to get our cars out…they were buried, but really there was no where to go because everything was closed down.

Our patio furniture is buried!

Happy Holidays!

My in-laws flew into Colorado on Monday and I have been busy catching up with them and with Christmas preparations and festivities this past week. I hope to post new art work after the holidays.

Colorado is currently under a blizzard warning with 18-24″ of snow forcast for the Denver metro area today. Yay, we’re going to have a white Christmas, baring unseasonably warm temps this weekend. School is canceled for my daughter today so we’re going to stay home and bake cookies, watch movies and play games!

I hope everyone has a terrific holiday, whichever one you observe! I’ll be taking a blog break until the 26th of December…see you then!

I’ve been tagged by Lynette

But, before I tell you 6 weird things about myself…I want everyone to head over to Diana’s blog, aka The Lone Beader, a talented lass and bead artist who hails from MA, who also happens to be a stagehand. She recently had her work featured Thursday as the Art of the Day on EBSQ. She makes amazing bead art and currently has a work in progress on her blog and today’s post really made me laugh! I practically spit my coffee out all over my computer when I first popped over! But you have to read the past few posts to get it.

Okay, 6 weird things about myself…this is hard because I think I’m soo normal!

  1. I like to eat cold left overs…sometimes more than the original food!
  2. I could eat rice everyday, 3 times a day…we buy it by the bushel!
  3. I have 3 favorite pairs of knickers…I suppose everyone does…why? comfort, color, style? I’m not sure, they just are.
  4. I have a strawberry shaped and colored birthmark on my left knee and in the summer when I wear shorts, people always ask me if I fell or something. I don’t notice it anymore and am always surprised when someone mentions it.
  5. I have very blond hair naturally I might add…to the point that everyone thinks that I color my hair. Sometimes I say I do color it if asked…people believe that more and move on (it comes my Scandinavian heritage).
  6. Because of that…I decided to dye my hair red a few years ago…I had red hair for about 2 years and loved it! I felt sassy! I should see if I can find a photo of me with red hair to share.

These little tidbits seem so personal…but it is me and about me, so here they stand!

Meanwhile, I have picked my next famous painting to paint and stitch…a Botticelli, actually a portion of a Botticelli fresco…this one is Giovanna Lemmi paying homage to the three Graces. I’m only doing 2 of the Graces…. I saw this at the Louvre years ago and really loved it.

Here’s the whole fresco

Here are the 2 Graces that I am going to concentrate on

Edvard Munch’s The Scream Painted, Quilted Fabric Postcard

The original as downloaded from the internet

I thought an orange batik would be the perfect fabric for the base and I learned a new technique…staple the fabric while I’m painting so that it doesn’t curl or buckle

I ended yesterday’s post by mentioning some other artists who were also symbolists like Klimt, including Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch. So, I decided I definitely needed to do one of his pieces. His painting, The Scream (1893) is such an iconographic piece and is still so recognizable today!

I learned a little bit though…I always thought it was a self portrait of the artist in a manic state. It is in a sense…this is what he wrote in his diary “I was walking along a path with two friends—the sun was setting—suddenly the sky turned blood red—I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence—there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city—my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety—and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.”

It was during this time that Munch’s sister was interned in an insane asylum. Someone has also linked this time period with the eruption of a volcano on the Island of Krakatoa, whose volcanic ash caused intense red sunsets all over the world. Another interesting note is that he rendered several different versions of the painting in his lifetime. And, from time to time one is stolen and then recovered again!

I find all this info really interesting…what information are we passing on in our art?

I will be posting this one for sale on Etsy…I’m still undecided on the Klimt one.
