Patron’s Choice Award – Thank you!
My daughter happened upon me uploading photographs of Larry to the EBSQ website so that I could enter his likeness in the Dolls and Puppets Show a few weeks ago. Ten year olds being what they are, she asked why he was named Larry. “Duh,” I responded. “You named him last summer!” She doesn’t think that Larry is dignified enough, and he’s been rechristened Sir Lawrence Buddington, Larry to his friends. At any rate, Larry won the Patron’s Choice Award – so thank you to all who voted for him. His ego has exploded and he has become almost impossible to live with.
Meanwhile, I proposed 3 classes to the Art Student’s League of Denver for their kid’s summer art camps, and tweaked my mixed media doll sculpture so that it isn’t the same thing offered at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. I’m going to work on crafting a Larryesque type doll into a marionette style puppet. I think that will be a fun project to work on and I’ve been fascinated by marionettes ever since I found the Denver Puppet Theater almost 3 years ago today. We had my daughter’s birthday party at the theater when she turned 7 and I had just as much fun watching the show and exploring the theater as the kids.
Speaking of birthdays, my daughter just turned 10 yesterday. OMG, she’s out of single digits and is growing up way too fast! We enjoyed a family birthday celebration at the Sushi Den – her choice. I asked her, “Don’t you want to go somewhere like Macaroni Grill for Pasta, like a normal kid?” No, she has refined tastes and preferred to treat herself to the best sushi in town. I have to say, it was delicious.
Good news, I called the County of Denver Court hotline last night and my juror number was not listed – so I don’t have to report to jury duty today! Thank you shining star looking down on me – I have so much to do today and this week.
That’s it for today,
~Cynthia
& New Porcelain Jewelry">Kid’s Ceramic Insects & New Porcelain Jewelry
I’m pleased to announce that I spoke with the director of the Art Student’s League of Denver yesterday afternoon and she offered me a position as a summer kid’s art camp instructor for 2008! Very excited about the possibilities. I can teach one class, repeat the class a different weeks or teach as many different classes as I can dream up. I’ll need to work on some proposals this weekend and take a good look at my schedule for next summer. She loved Larry, but I’ll need to tweak the project so that I don’t repeat my class that I have scheduled at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in July 2008. Speaking of Larry, I entered him in a doll and puppet contest over at EBSQ – so if you’re registered with the site and like Larry, could ya vote for him? Polls are open till Dec. 8th.
This porcelain necklace is fresh from my kiln as of Dec. 1st and is available for purchase from my Etsy Shop.
We’re headed up to the mountains this afternoon for a mini ski trip. I’m bringing my laptop (have to work on those proposals) with me and hope to share some awesome photos with you.
Have a good weekend everyone,
~Cynthia
New Work
I’ve been working on some new pieces the past month, but didn’t bring them with me to the sale this past weekend. You see, I’m saving them for when they go on view at the Colorado Potter’s Guild when I will be considered for membership to the guild. In addition to the written application, interview, references, etc. My work will be on display along with other candidate’s work so that all the members can get a good look at what we’re capable of before being voted to stay on the island.
I’m quite pleased with these pieces and their organic soft carved shapes. I would like to make more of these forms. After throwing them, I let them set up to an almost leather hard state, after which time, I take a Sure Form to them to get the chiseled effect. I spend a good amount of time sanding them down after they’re bone dry to soften the edges. I don’t really have a plan beforehand, but let the clay “talk” to me, if you will. Making the first cut with the sure form is the hardest decision for me to make…how’s that song go?
Meanwhile, I have an interview tomorrow afternoon with the director of the Art Student’s League of Denver to teach a kid’s clay workshop there next summer. That would be good….
Thanks for listening to Vinnie Jones’ Change from Introducing Joss Stone – I had this album loaded on my iPod and when I went on my run this am, I thought, ain’t this the truth? I’m living change right now and it’s both exhilarating and scary at the same time. Who knows what’s around the corner?
Till later,
~Cynthia
