Happy Mother’s Day
Now that my garden is waking up, and the snow has given way to occasional sprinkles – I am grateful that spring will soon become summer. Dappled sun is sprinkling through the front window, the familiar whirl of lawn mowers can now be heard on weekends again and even the birds sound happier.
My daughter’s school year is also winding up at the same time that it’s wrapping up for the year. There is a crescendo of activities and appearances that have to be made that is taking time away from my normal schedule and studio rhythm – be that what it is. Middle school orientation, school art show, Shakespeare Festival, Home Tour, field trips, teacher appreciation week, 5th grade graduation, end of year picnic, talent show – it’s never ending right now.
In other news, my family and I just purchased tickets to fly to Germany this summer. We’ve been socking money away in our vacation fund for awhile now and my husband found tickets prices that we couldn’t ignore – for about $500 per person we’re headed out of town in mid June. Not to worry, my in-laws will be keeping tabs on the dogs while we’re away. My step mother lives in Germany and we’re going to see her and my step sister, along with her family who we haven’t seen since my daughter was 2 1/2. I need to dust off my German language skills – though I admit that I speak much better German while drinking a Weizen or two.
We’re starting to plan side trips to different cities and towns we’d like to visit balanced with an 11 1/2 year old girl’s interests and attention span.
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day – Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out in cyber-space – especially my Mom, my mother-in-law Vicky and to Ulla (my step-mom) too!
Have a great weekend,
~Cynthia
Mothers Day is just around the corner…
April 2009: These tiles were made for Mother's Day gifts by my students. We rolled slabs of clay and using 6″ square chip board templates (I made these in advance of class), the students cut their tiles. Afterwards, the kids drew images and words on newsprint and cut out their shapes which were used as paper stencils. The placed their paper stencils on their tiles and painted underglaze over top. As soon as the underglaze was dry to the touch, we removed the paper stencils. The tiles are currently drying in my studio under sheet rock (to keep them flat) and will be glazed clear after being bisque fired. Made using low fire white earthenware.

Yes it’s true – Mother’s Day is only weeks away. With that in mind, I had my kids make a practical gift for their Moms. The kids weren’t super thrilled about tiles – but hey – what Mom can’t use a tile in the kitchen? I know I always need more and would rather use one my daughter made than some generic store bought one.
For these tiles, I had the kids roll a texture on the reverse side so that the tiles will be slightly raised in areas – I’m imagining that these could be used as a buffer for hot serving dishes to protect a table top. We used hand made paper stencils for the designs – I have to say that I really like the way they turned out and look forward to seeing them glazed which should bring out more intense colors than seen on my computer screen.
Meanwhile, I decided to grow up a little – I removed my nose ring yesterday and it’s already closing shut. I fear though that it’s going to leave a small scar where the hole once was [I'm not really afraid of the scar, it will be a good reminder that it was once there, a symbol if you will
]. No one has noticed which is good – means I won’t miss it and must be the only person who can see the evidence. I think nose rings are attractive, but don’t want to be the woman trying to look younger than she is – tends to have an opposite effect imho.
With that, I close – perfect day to hit the studio – expecting temps in the 80′s today,
~Cynthia
Happy Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Sometimes the best art works are the drawings/painting/sculptures made by children. I have stacks and stacks of my daughter’s work, including the drawing above, that I’ll treasure and keep forever.
Have a good week everyone!

Oh ya, I almost forgot, I was tagged by Lynette Clay and Dinahmow, with the same meme, so if you don’t mind, I hope my answers will satisfy both tags. I’m not sure if I can come up with 7 things about me that you might not know…but I’ll try.
- I just completed substitute teacher orientation with Denver Public Schools on Thursday.
- I’m a little nervous to complete my first sub assignment. I signed up to sub for all of the elementary schools in a 2 mile radius from my home and for art sub jobs k-12 district wide.
- Despite being able to sleep till noon when I was younger, I can no longer sleep past 6:30am on any given day.
- My favorite adult beverage is a frozen margarita, salt please and my fave non-alcoholic drink is coffee with milk, no sugar.
- I’m married to my high school sweet-heart, it’s both a good thing and a scary one – he would agree with me on that point.
- We have talked about adopting some kids in the past since we only have one child and there are soo many kids out there that need a good home.
- Finally, I have a secret that I can’t tell anyone – including you!
Since this meme has hit just about everyone whose blogs I visit, I won’t be tagging you, however, if you feel left out, consider yourself tagged!
