New Work

Stoneware Vase, cone 6, 8″ h x 4.5″ w

I’ve been working on some new pieces the past month, but didn’t bring them with me to the sale this past weekend. You see, I’m saving them for when they go on view at the Colorado Potter’s Guild when I will be considered for membership to the guild. In addition to the written application, interview, references, etc. My work will be on display along with other candidate’s work so that all the members can get a good look at what we’re capable of before being voted to stay on the island.

I’m quite pleased with these pieces and their organic soft carved shapes. I would like to make more of these forms. After throwing them, I let them set up to an almost leather hard state, after which time, I take a Sure Form to them to get the chiseled effect. I spend a good amount of time sanding them down after they’re bone dry to soften the edges. I don’t really have a plan beforehand, but let the clay “talk” to me, if you will. Making the first cut with the sure form is the hardest decision for me to make…how’s that song go?

Meanwhile, I have an interview tomorrow afternoon with the director of the Art Student’s League of Denver to teach a kid’s clay workshop there next summer. That would be good….

Thanks for listening to Vinnie Jones’ Change from Introducing Joss Stone - I had this album loaded on my iPod and when I went on my run this am, I thought, ain’t this the truth? I’m living change right now and it’s both exhilarating and scary at the same time. Who knows what’s around the corner?

Till later,

~Cynthia
